Caring for your Quality Hand Made Pen
Now that you have
purchased a Quality Writing Instrument from JC Wood Pens, how do you take
proper care of the materials and mechanisms?
Your pen will give you years of reliable service if maintained properly. See the suggested tips listed below to keep you wood or acrylic pen in top working order. The final finish we use on wood pens will act as a sealer and protective coating for your pen. If you want to buff the pen after some time and use, use a light coat of furniture paste wax and this will protect and put a shine on the wood. A plastic type clear coat car polish can also be used on both wood and acrylic pen barrels. |
A Few Suggestions
Please use your pen, it is designed for daily writing.

Wood Pens
Wood pens are made from well, natural wood! Some of the woods we use have been chemically stabilized and some are just checked for moisture content and turned into shape. Wood is subject to environmental conditions and some care should be taken to maintain the beauty and the stability of the pen barrel(s). Try not to drop you pen! If it lands on the nib the materials may scratch, chip, or even crack.
Don’t use cleaning fluids or any abrasive substance (car wax) on any part of your new writing instrument. The fluids and / or abrasives may damage the fine finish. Some woods are very temperature sensitive (burls, rosewoods) and may split or develop cracks from extremes of heat and cold. Don’t leave it in your car where the temperature changes could lead to damage and possibly even cause the refill cartridge to leak. Don’t leave it out in the sun for the same reasons. |
Acrylic & Other
Acrylics
The many varieties of Acrylics used in our pens are man-made products. Acrylics are a little more stable when it comes to temperature variations. The same care should be taken with the synthetics as with Wood Pens listed above. These materials more delicate and can be damaged or cracked if dropped or hit by a hard object. If your finish dulls over time, any high quality car polish or clear coat polish can be used. Light scratches can be buffed out with automotive scratch remover or even toothpaste. Brass Cartridge Pens Some of the brass cartridges are buffet and coated with a furniture polish. Some are coated with a sealer similar to that used on the wood pens. The “reproduction” cartridges come with an applied factory coating. The natural brass will tarnish from oxidation in the air and in skin oils over a period of time. You can use a brass cleaner to restore the finish to a bright luster. Do not use the polish on any non-brass parts of the pen because the polish can remove the protective finish. Synthetic Stone (Corian, Tru-Stone, etc.) These products are very durable but they can be damaged by rough handling. If the finish dulls it can be restored with a light buffing with automotive wax or clear coat polish. Fine scratches can be removed with a fine rubbing compound or even toothpaste. |
